Griffin Schaefer was a man of mystery last season.
That?s because it was anybody?s guess where he was going to play on the offensive line.
As a junior, Schaefer lined up at four of the five positions, everywhere except center. But the rising senior at Maine South is looking forward to a permanent home this year at right guard.
?It was really an experience last year,? said Schaefer, who measures 6-foot-2 and 265 pounds. ?I had to know every play for all those positions, but I was happy to fill those positions.?
Nevertheless, Schaefer, one of five linemen with significant varsity experience back for the Hawks, isn?t complaining about staying put for his final season.
?It?s comforting to know that,? the three-year varsity veteran said. ?I won?t have to learn on the fly anymore, and I am able to understand more about one position.
?Perfecting one position will be substantial in my success.?
The Maine South line showed off its talents last week at Wheaton Warrenville South?s 7-on-7 tournament by winning the linemen challenge. The 10 events included tire flips, 45-pound plate hold, obstacle course and tug of war.
The Hawks skill players ? led by quarterback and tournament MVP Matt Alviti ? made it to the semifinals and finished 7-2. Upstart Elk Grove, playing under new coach Larry Calhoun, won the tournament by beating Glenbard North.
Alviti, a Northwestern recruit, will count on the big boys up front as Maine South strives to return to its winning ways in the postseason.
?Nothing?s been forgotten about last year,? Schaefer said of Maine South?s exit in the second round that ended the team?s run of three consecutive state championships. ?But we are not dwelling on it.?
Mike Rubino, another returning starter on the line, shared Schaefer?s resolve. Rubino, a 6-4, 265-pound senior, said everybody learned something from last year.
Rubino also finally has a home this season. After playing center for part of last year, he?s now at right tackle.
?It?s different,? he said. ?The pass-blocking is harder, but I think I can handle it. I have less things to worry about.?
Rubino did agree that blocking for Alviti, a serial scrambler, comes with its challenges.
?Yes,? he laughed. ?I never know where he?s going to be.?
Others back on line this summer include Pat Maloney, Dan Poulos and Danny Nordstrom. At 6-3, 275 pounds, Maloney holds several Division I offers from mid-major programs.
?We?ve been working hard this summer to improve everything about ourselves,? Schaefer said. ?We want to be successful again.?

Exposure to violence has long-term stress effects among adolescents

Children who are exposed to community violence continue to exhibit a physical stress response up to a year after the exposure, suggesting that exposure to violence may have long-term negative health consequences, according researchers at Penn State and University College London.
"We know that exposure to violence is linked with aggression, depression, post-traumatic stress symptoms and academic and cognitive difficulties in the short term, but little is known about the long-term effects of such exposure," said Elizabeth Susman, Jean Phillips Shibley Professor of Biobehavioral Health, Penn State. "Our data show that the stress reaction to violence exposure is not just immediate. There's an effect that endures."
The scientists recruited 124 adolescents, ranging in age from 8 to 13 and living in small city and rural communities, to participate in the study.
"Most studies of the effects of exposure to violence look at children who live in inner cities and urban communities," said Melissa Peckins, biobehavioral health graduate student, Penn State. "Our study is unique because we focused on children who live in small towns, so they are not children you would normally expect to be exposed to a lot of violence. Also, these were healthy children without a history of reported maltreatment."
The researchers gave each of the adolescents a questionnaire, which identified their lifetime exposure to violence and exposure within the past 12 months. They then gave the adolescents the beginning of a story and asked them to complete it in front of two mock judges, whom they were told were evaluating their responses and performances for later comparison to those of other children the same age. Following the story-completion task, adolescents were also given a serial subtraction task.
"The story completion task and mental arithmetic task are commonly used to elicit a stress response in laboratory settings," Peckins said. "Our hypothesis was that children who have been exposed to more violent events in the past year will have an attenuated response to the laboratory stressor -- even 12 months after the incidence -- compared with children who experienced fewer violent events."
The team measured the children's stress responses by comparing the cortisol levels present in samples of their saliva collected before and after the stress test was administered.
"In males, we found that as exposure to violence increased, cortisol reactivity decreased, so cortisol reactivity was attenuated; it was a habituation effect," Peckins said.
The finding was not present in females. The results were published online in a recent issue of the Journal of Adolescent Health.
"In enduring stressful conditions, we may have adapted evolutionarily to suppress our cortisol levels because higher and more prolonged levels of cortisol in the bloodstream can lead to negative health consequences, such as autoimmune disorders, lowered immunity, arthritis and atypical depression. This may explain why cortisol reactivity was lower for males," Susman said. "However, there is a theory that females may react to stressful situations by talking about it, which may be their way of reducing the negative effects of cortisol in the bloodstream. If parents and other adults are available to discuss episodes of violence with children, it might help the children, especially females, to reduce their cortisol levels."
In the future, the team hopes to examine the role of duration of exposure to violence and time elapsed after exposure to violence on cortisol reactivity.

Ex-Commerce secretary won't be charged in hit-run
LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Prosecutors declined Tuesday to file criminal charges against former U.S. Commerce Secretary John Bryson, saying a seizure caused a bizarre series of traffic collisions that led to his resignation.
Bryson's Lexus struck a car on June 9 that was stopped for a train in San Gabriel. He spoke briefly with the three occupants then hit the car again as he departed, police said. Bryson then rammed another vehicle in a neighboring city a few minutes later. He was found unconscious in his vehicle.
The Commerce Department said at the time that Bryson had a "limited recall of the events" and had not suffered any previous seizures.
Bryson, 68, was cited by police for felony hit-and run, and tests revealed he didn't have any alcohol or drugs in his system. Low amounts of Ambien were found in his bloodstream, but investigators couldn't determine if the sleep aid was a factor in the collisions.
"Both treating doctors agree that suspect was suffering from confusion following a seizure and crashed as a result," court documents say. "Based on doctors' opinions there is insufficient evidence to show knowing failure to provide personal information for hit-and-run."
Phone messages left for San Gabriel police and Bryson's wife, Louise, were not immediately returned.
Police in San Gabriel, a community of about 40,000 people northeast of Los Angeles, presented evidence Monday to county prosecutors, who decided against filing charges.
Bryson resigned as commerce secretary on June 21, saying then he had suffered a seizure and didn't want his health to be a distraction from his job. He had been in California to deliver the commencement address at Pasadena Polytechnic School, which his four children attended.
He is the former head of Edison International, the holding company that owns Southern California Edison, and has served on the boards of Boeing Co., Walt Disney Co. and major corporations.
