A-Rod breaks hand, Seattle beats Yankees 4-2

SEATTLE (AP) ? Even as Alex Rodriguez writhed on the ground in pain, he didn't believe his left hand was fractured.

Turns out A-Rod was wrong, and now the Yankees will be without another of their star players.

"It's difficult. Tough break," Rodriguez said in almost a hushed tone after New York lost to the Seattle Mariners 4-2 Tuesday night.

Rodriguez broke his hand when he was hit by an 88 mph changeup from Felix Hernandez in the eighth inning. He went down in considerable pain. The Yankees said he has a non-displaced fracture of the hand, and there is no timetable for his return. He will be placed on the disabled list and will remain in Seattle with the team for the series finale Wednesday.

Eric Chavez, Rodriguez's replacement at third base, had a similar injury in 2004. He was out for about five weeks.

"You hate to see a guy go down on something freak like that," Yankees' first baseman Mark Teixeira said. "I had a weird feeling it wasn't good."

Rodriguez was the last of three Yankees to get plunked in a five-batter stretch and that ended Hernandez's night. He also hit Ichiro Suzuki and Derek Jeter with pitches.

While not sharp, Hernandez had allowed only Curtis Granderson's first-inning home run and worked out of jams in the fourth and fifth innings.

The sudden loss of control started when Hernandez hit former teammate Suzuki on the foot with a breaking ball in the seventh. He then hit Jeter in the arm to open the eighth and completed the trio when his 3-2 pitch to Rodriguez tailed up and in.

None of the Yankees felt any of the wayward pitches were intentional and Hernandez was apologetic.

"It was getting away. It was a changeup to A-Rod," Hernandez said. "I feel bad.

Rodriguez has been durable this season after failing to play at least 150 games since 2007. He had played in all but three of the Yankees 97 games this year after playing just 99 last season.

But A-Rod's production has fallen way off. He was hitting just .274 with 15 homers and 44 RBIs entering Tuesday's game, although he was hitting .328 over his last 16 games.

With the acquisition of Suzuki on Monday to take over for injured left-fielder Brett Gardner, the Yankees appeared to be done with any big moves before the non-waiver trade deadline in a week. Losing A-Rod, though, could change that. New York's main option at third base now is the injury-prone Chavez.

"We'll just have to talk about it and see what we come up with," Chavez said. "Whatever he asks me to do I'll just give it my best shot."

Rodriguez joins Andy Pettitte, Mariano Rivera, Michael Pineda and Gardner as key pieces of the Yankees puzzle who have missed time with injuries.

Whatever the time-frame on Rodriguez, it's one more obstacle for the Yankees to overcome. They do have the luxury of a seven-game lead in the AL East, even with their recent West Coast slump.

"You find out how good you are. Other guys are going to have to step up. We can't feel sorry for ourselves because no one else is going to," Jeter said. "It's going to be a challenge, but it's been a challenge for all the injuries we've had this season."

Lost in the concern over Rodriguez was starter Freddy Garcia (4-4) looking more like the 2001 version that won 18 games with the Mariners and was an All-Star. Garcia struck out a season-high eight and retired the final 15 he faced before being pulled with one out in the eighth.

But Garcia was pitching from behind after the Yankees offense failed in getting to Hernandez in both the fourth and fifth innings when New York had runners in scoring position and couldn't get clutch hits. Teixeira added a sacrifice fly in the eighth, but reliever Lucas Luetge struck out Raul Ibanez with two on to end the threat.

That was all secondary to what the absence of Rodriguez will mean for the Yankees.

"We're going to have to change it around a little," manager Joe Girardi said. "He had been swinging the bat really good too. We've had to overcome some things so far, we're just going to have to continue to do it."

ABSTRACT

Background/Aims: Thrombocytosis had been found to be associated with tumor metastasis and poor prognosis in malignant tumors including colorectal cancer (CRC). In the present study, we investigated the relationship between the platelet and the biological features in patients with CRC in China. Methodology: The correlation of platelet counts of 150 cases with CRC with their clinicopathological characteristics was explored. Furthermore, the survival impact of preoperative platelet count was also investigated. Results: Statistically significant correlations between the platelet count and the lymph node and distance metastasis (p=0.016 and 0.014), vascular and perinural invasion (p=0.025 and 0.016) as well as TNM clinical stages (p=0.014) except for the age, gender and grades (p=0.245, 0.276 and 0.324, respectively) were found. In addition, 5-year survival of patients with high platelet count and normal platelet count were 13.30% and 56.30%, respectively (p=0.000). Meanwhile, concurrent with lymph node and distance metastasis, perinural invasion and clinical stages (p=0.000, 0.022, 0.034 and 0.000), platelet count (p=0.010) was also found to be an independent prognostic factor in CRC in our study through multivariate analysis.
Conclusions: Elevated platelet might play some role in the progress of CRC and preoperative platelet count might be a prognostic indicator in the CRC patients.

Three civilian contractors were killed by a gunman wearing an Afghan national security force uniform on Sunday.

"Also, one insurgent was killed in the engagement and we are still looking for one more shooter."

All five of the NATO service members, meantime, were killed in roadside bomb attacks ? one on Saturday and four on Sunday.

The deaths bring the number of foreign forces killed in July to 32, and the total for this year to 247 so far, the AP reported.

Scientists have made an artificial jellyfish out of rat heart muscles and rubbery silicon. When given an electric shock, it swims just like the real thing.?

?That then allows us to extend their lifetime,? John Dabiri, a professor of aeronautics and bioengineering at the California Institute of Technology, told me.

The breakthrough is a big step toward the development of an artificial human heart with living cells. It also opens a window to a future where humans could loosen the constraints of evolution.

?The design of the heart that we have today is by no means the best physically possible design,? Dabiri said. ?It is the one that evolution stumbled onto over the course of millions of years of random searching.?

It?s possible, perhaps probable, that there?s a better design out there for humans to discover. An artificial heart, for example, could be engineered to steer clear of heart disease, the leading cause of death in the U.S.

Building a better pump
To get there, though, scientists must first understand how biology assembles its building blocks into a?pump, Dabiri noted.?

?We know pretty well how to build engineered pumps, things that are built out of steel and aluminum and so on,? he said. ?We don?t have as good a handle right now in biology on how nature builds things out of muscle tissues.?

To start, they looked to the jellyfish, an example of a simple biological pump, and tried to build it in the lab from scratch.

Jellyfish essentially have two parts: muscle cells that squeeze down on the body, pushing out water and jetting the animal the opposite way, and elastic stretchy tissue (the jelly) that gently recovers to its relaxed shape after each pump.

?In our engineered system, we needed to have these two components,? Dabiri explained.?

The team could have used jellyfish tissue and jellyfish muscle, but ?it so happens that the building blocks we are more familiar with in tissue engineering come from the heart cells of rats,? he said.

The technique was pioneered by Kevin Kit Parker, a bioengineer at Harvard and co-author of a paper describing the artificial jellyfish published today in the journal Nature Biotechnology.?

It allows researchers to take rat heart cells and pattern them in different shapes and sizes that act as actuators ? ?things that can move, they can pump, they can flap,? Dabiri said.

For the jelly part, the team used a thin layer of silicone rubber.

Putting together?the pieces
The next step was to put the two pieces together in the best possible way to get a functioning jellyfish. Instead of simply copying nature, the team tried out all kinds of muscle patterns, looking for the best.

?As engineers in this process of building artificial jellyfish, we simply don?t have the same constraints that evolution does,? Dabiri said.?

?These organisms, as they evolve, have to worry about fending off predators, catching their prey, reproducing. All we have to do is show up in a lab and try to be creative.?

?So, it is a very different set of constraints that we have in terms of developing this, and so it is not surprising that we might find solutions that are different from what might have come through evolution.?

In the end, the team settled on a muscle arrangement that is similar to that of the jellyfish, but ?not a carbon copy,? Dabiri said.?

When the team put the engineered jellyfish into a pool of ionized water and sent an electric signal through the water, the fish swam like a real jellyfish.

?We haven?t yet developed an internal pacemaking system within these artificial jellyfish, so the way that we control the functioning is, we shock them,? Dabiri explained.

Future of jellyfish and hearts
An internal pacemaker mechanism and chemical receptors that act as a nose to sniff out food are additions planned for future versions of the jellyfish, called Medusoid, to give it greater autonomy.

This might raise science-fiction?fears of giant artificial jellyfish roaming the waters ? note that there?s another group working on robotic jellyfish that will never run out of energy. But in reality, the main application for the technology would be in?biomedicine. Even in its current form, Medusoid could be used to test the effect drugs have on the pumping mechanism of a heart, for example.?

In the future, the research may lead to an artificial heart. One, perhaps, that is better than a healthy human heart.?And if we can engineer better hearts, will we stop there? Does this open the door to a completely rebuilt ? and improved ? human?
