There's a booming genre in wee books of things to see or do "before you die." I don't read these books, but Australian hospice nurse?Bronnie Ware's?recently-published book,?The Top Five Regrets of the Dying,?did catch my attention.

Ware found that her patients' regrets weren't about things done imperfectly. We forgive the imperfections of our actions?and we regret our?inactions. The inept parent, for example, can forgive himself at the end. At least he tried. But the one who never attempted it might feel the sting of regret.

I was most intrigued to hear Ware?describe the number one regret as a failure of courage. Her patients wished that they had had the?courage?to live the life that they wanted to have, whatever it was, and not the one that others had prescribed for them.

I believe that wisdom applies to marriage and relationships. There are couples who are content with the marriage and family life status quo, certainly, but there are others, well-intentioned and married to decent people, who struggle with that status quo and would like to create a different life, if only they could muster the courage to try, to ask a tough question, to make a change, to speak honestly, or to color outside of the lines. ?

Whatever the case, it occurred to me after listening to Ware that the bucket list that really seems to matter is about relationships more than activities, experiences, things, or travel. ?

So here's my list of some human encounters that we should try to have before we die. I bet that any of these relationship experiences would be as sweetly-recalled at life's end as having seen the pyramids, or that time you tried bungee-jumping in a parking lot.

FIND THE "I'D LOVE TO GO TO THE GARBAGE DUMP WITH YOU" BEST FRIEND. This friendship is so effortless and rejuvenating that you'd rather be in the company of that person, even doing the dreariest chore, than almost anywhere else. The wonderful Anne Lamott writes it best:"When you have a friend like this, she can say, 'Hey, I've got to drive up to the dump in Petaluma?wanna come along?' and you honestly can't think of anything in the world you'd rather do." ??

BE A TORCH CARRIER (BUT NOT A STALKER). It's good to experience both being the lover and the beloved at some point in life, both Dante and Beatrice. Often in romantic relationships, the roles are asymmetrical in this way, although we don't like to admit it. Unequal love in romantic relationships is as much an unseemly, unspoken truth as parental favoritism. But there's a bittersweet pleasure to clutching an abiding, unrequited passion in your memory. The object of desire remains an ideal, untainted by actual consummation. And there's a courage, too, although best appreciated retrospectively, in having made an ass out of yourself for love?so long as you can take no for an answer, and quit. ?I've not been a stranger to my own "make an ass" out of yourself advice, but it's a small, unavoidable price to pay for agency and self-determination.

AT LEAST ONCE IN YOUR LIFE, HAVE A LOVE AFFAIR WITH YOUR WORK. Lord knows few of us think of our work as a relationship, to say nothing of a love story, but it can be. It can elicit powerful emotions and profound devotion and joy. In other words, it can be a love affair. I love my work. I love the process of it. I love it even when I fail at it. The work itself satisfies, on its own terms and not instrumentally for any secondary praise, glory or wealth (hah!) that it might bring. It's such a gift to wake up in the morning and have a big old crush on your job, or your new project.

BE A DEFENDER OF THE WEAK. At least once, and hopefully habitually, be the one who stands up for someone weaker in a social group. Don't be the lemming. In middle school, I was the beneficiary of a more popular, prettier girl who stood up for me, the social weakling. When I had a chance to do the same for her, however, in a different time and place, I didn't. I was a lemming instead. And 32 years later, I can?still?feel keenly the shame of having gone along when I should have stood up. I only vaguely remember being the occasional bully victim-but I?do?remember, and rue, having enabled a bully. That shame sticks.

BE THE "COOL GROWN-UP"?that someone else's child remembers, years, later, as a hazy blur of panache and style. I always wanted to be this, but haven't been.

HAVE THE PLEASURE OF STAYING UP ALL NIGHT TALKING (TO OTHER PEOPLE, THAT IS). These evenings are some of my favorites. My husband and I were very close to one couple some time ago. Our evenings with them would start with dinner and wine, and end when the sun was coming up over Baltimore's downtown. We'd talked and laughed so much that my sides hurt, and my voice was scratchy that whole next day.

HAVE A CRAZY-MAD LUST-LOVE RELATIONSHIP?that involves, say, spending days entirely in a hotel bed and never tiring of each other's carnality. Keep the blinds down, and drink good wine while you do this, and don't forget that everyone would be insanely jealous if they knew, so you should keep it to yourself.

BE SOMEONE'S "REALITY-BASED" FRIEND.?You courageously get to say, and do say, all of the unpleasant truths and hard advice. The friend hearing it might loathe you for having said so at first and then, years later, thank you for your candor, which they come to see as a gesture of caring.

Elizabeth Blackney: Generations X and Y: Grit, Freedom and Triumph

The film Act of Valor opened this weekend with an unprecedented cast. Active Duty Navy SEALs star in the gripping tale of global terrorism and heroic acts undertaken to stop it. The tag line, "The Only Easy Day Was Yesterday" rings true for children, teens and young adults in Generation Y. Their childhood has been dominated by images of war and terrorism. Their fathers, brothers and friends have fought and died, fought and lived and protected freedom for their fellow Americans and our Western Allies.

Their emotional palate is complex. More than any previous generation, the sheer volume of information via media, social networking and the capability for near-instant communication around the clock are the norm. On Act of Valor's soundtrack is a young man named Hunter Hayes whose insightful songs lend a glimpse into the hearts of Generation Y.

They are the children of Baby Boomers, Generation Jones and GenXers. More than anything, they are fearless creators of content. They are brave souls looking to make a difference. In 2008, so many were inspired to believe in Obama's youth appeal. Because they are saturated with information but also, so very young and naive to dangerous behavior that seems enshrined by reality television. We must look at what tomorrow's leaders need from us, their parents and mentors. Not everything they hunger for is base and vulgar. The stratospheric success of Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood and other crossover musicians as well as scandal-free movie stars like Rachel McAdams and others bends the curve.

Generation Y isn't buying what the rest of us are selling. Not every kid is lining up to be a ne'er do well.

Listening works. It's the best way to earn trust, build rapport and develop insight. I had a conversation recently with country music's sensational new face, Hunter Hayes, and was impressed. Our wide ranging discussion about fame, hard work and creative vision was remarkable. This talented young man is a force to be reckoned with.

At age two, he was tinkering with instruments. At age four, he had already been on stage with Hank Williams, Jr. He knew from age six how to articulate his path from music prodigy to professional, working musician. He wrote his first song. He envisioned learning every instrument he wanted and needed to play to achieve his dream.

While in high school, he spent free time on his craft. He played the guitar, the drums, the bass, the piano and many other instruments. In class, he would get through his day by self-encouragement. I asked him what that looked like, "I would look at my watch, if it was 10:00 AM, I knew that I would just be rolling into town on my tour bus. If it was 2:00 PM, I knew it would be just about time for sound check."

The uncanny similarity to other youth rings true. Other students and youth I have interviewed in recent months exhibit a similar drive. One young woman I recently spoke with has known for years what her path will be. Every step she takes is with an eye towards graduate degrees and a spot as a curator at an internationally renowned museum. Her friends have similarly ambitious ideas. One wants to be a designer and founded a successful youth group, partnered with nearly a dozen stores and is launching her career. Another young man I recently interviewed at a Global Studies program in Virginia has known for years that he is destined to attend a service academy, preferably in Annapolis, so he can become a pilot. He knows the salary, the benefits and when he wants to get married. Another wanted to attend Annapolis, serve in the U.S. Marine Corps then become a criminal defense attorney. Another wants a career in the music industry and works daily at her craft, writing and devoting every free moment to the development of her angelic voice. These are Hunter Hayes' constituents.

Hayes' work ethic is clear. His "brand" did not require the careful hand of a studio head. He is authentic, down to earth and genuine. He spoke of living his dream and coping with fame, "It's very freeing to know nothing has to go the way it did yesterday." Of finding calm amidst the storm he created with hissmash single "Storm Warning," Hayes mentioned how grateful he is to be living his dream. His competence as a composer, writer and leader have drawn together a group of musicians that highlight his prowess. Hayes dominates without being dominating. He is also a savvy leader, noting his father's advice to "never do business with anyone you wouldn't do dinner with."

His music is real, and his incredible gifts are on display. When we spoke, he was just wrapping up a tour with Rascal Flatts and playing a solo date at The Norva in Norfolk, Virginia. The room was filled with young women, men and their families. He scoffed at the pressure to "write, record, sing, do the perfect song." Instead he noted there is a "desperate call for an honest song."

With all the grit, the coarseness and lowest common denominator on offer much of the time, Hayes gave this GenXer hope. The youth, they are our tomorrow. Trusting in their vision is sometimes the right thing to do. This young man, nominated for an ACM, who once opened for Taylor Swift now sits on the precipice of his own meteoric rise to the top. Just like the rest of the young men and women in Generation Y who will be tomorrow's leaders, tomorrow's diplomats and iconic artists, Hayes' clean, honest brand is like a fresh warm breeze right before the storm.

TAMPA | The treasure arrives at its original destination Saturday, 208 years behind schedule.

Two Spanish cargo planes departed MacDill Air Force Base on Friday bound for Madrid with $500 million in booty once carried by a Spanish galleon that sank off the coast of Portugal in 1804.

The treasure, weighing 17 tons, might be the richest shipwreck prize in history.

Recovered by Tampa-based Odyssey Marine Exploration in 2007, the flight marked the end of a bruising legal battle the company lost to Spain over possession of 594,000 silver coins and other artifacts.

Spain's ambassador to the United States, Jorge Dezcallar, told more than two dozen reporters and camera crews that Spain was finally reclaiming what was rightfully hers.

"We bear witness to that fateful day 200 years ago," he said." This is about our historical heritage. History makes us who we are, and today we are witnessing the end of a journey that started 200 years ago. It is our duty to end that mission successfully."

He said the treasure will eventually be displayed in museums in Spain and elsewhere. "This is not money to be sold," the ambassador said.

Officials at Odyssey Marine, which spent $2.6 million salvaging, transporting and storing the treasure, declined to comment. But in a statement earlier, Greg Stemm, Odyssey's co-founder, said, "People won't stop looking for Spanish shipwrecks. They will just stop reporting their finds. No archaeology will be done."

The company will receive no compensation from Spain for its recovery of the coins.

Spain thinks the coins were recovered from the wreck of the Nuestra Senora de las Mercedes. The ship was sunk by British warships as it sailed from South America. More than 200 people went to the bottom with it.

But Odyssey officials say the wreck was never positively identified as the Mercedes, casting doubt on Spain's claim.

A federal judge in Tampa ruled for Spain in 2009.

"The ineffable truth of this case is that the Mercedes is a naval vessel of Spain and that the wreck of this naval vessel, the vessel's cargo, and any human remains are the natural and legal patrimony of Spain despite any man's aspiration to the contrary," the judge's ruling said.

Earlier this month, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas rejected a bid to reverse a lower court ruling that Odyssey give up the treasure.

Odyssey, which uses remote-control vehicles to help recover undersea wrecks, called its Mercedes project "Black Swan."

Spain argued that the recovery of the treasure amounted to a disturbance of a historic site.

Javier Romero, a rear admiral in the Spanish navy, said, "Our sunken ships are sacred places. They are cemeteries. We prefer to leave the ships as they are."

James Goold, a Washington lawyer representing Spain, was asked if Spain should express its "gratitude" to Odyssey for recovering the treasures.

What if Spain, Goold said, took a relic from the sunken battleship Arizona at Pearl Harbor?

"Would the United States have gratitude then?" he said.

Friday's event may have been unprecedented for MacDill, which has hosted presidents, diplomats and its share of odd cargo through the years, but perhaps never before silver bullion.

The treasure, packed in white buckets wrapped in black plastic, arrived from an undisclosed location in Sarasota.

Local television stations used a helicopter to try to capture the transfer from Sarasota to Tampa. As the treasure arrived at MacDill, base officials took it to a hanger.

Air Force guards toting M-4 rifles stood between reporters and the two C-130 aircraft carrying the coins.

After a brief news conference, the media were led to an opening by the back of the aircraft to photograph pallets carrying the treasure. But the coins themselves were not visible.

A reporter asked the ambassador if Spain was trying to quickly spirit the treasure out of the United States to avoid further legal trouble.

With the treasure lost for two centuries, the question seemed to flummox Dezcallar.

"This," he said, "is not quickly."

Internet fraud and theft are major problems, there seems to be little doubt about that -- according to FCC chairman Julius Genachowski, some 8.4 million credit card numbers are stolen every year. The question, then, is who should be addressing the issue. Genachowski this week called for "smart, practical, voluntary solutions," asking internet service providers to put more effort into helping prevent data theft, hacks and other issues, or risk having "consumers lose trust in the internet," thereby "suppress[ing] broadband adoption and online commerce and communication." The chairman asked ISPs to help avoid hijacking through more efficient traffic routes and to instate DNSSEC to help weed out fraudulent sites.

Mick Jagger calls President Obama's singing 'courageous'

WASHINGTON ? The reviews are in, and Mick Jagger sizes up President Barack Obama?s singing of the blues this week as nothing short of ?courageous.?

The Rolling Stones frontman said Thursday the president did ?very well? when bluesman Buddy Guy successfully prodded him to join in on a few lines of ?Sweet Home Chicago,? the blues anthem of the president?s home town, during an East Room concert earlier in the week.

?I thought he was courageous, because there was some element of reluctance,? Jagger said, adding that ?it was a hard moment for the president to get out of.?

Jagger, in a phone interview with the AP, also said he was pleased to see that first lady Michelle Obama was wearing a dress that night designed by L?Wren Scott, his longtime girlfriend, who had a front-row seat for the concert.

Jagger, 68, said he?s never been invited to play at the White House before ? or for any head of state ? and he rated it a ?surreal gig experience.?

?I loved it,? he said. ?It was really unusual, surreal, and strange, but very enjoyable. ? I went out there and I tried to put out my best.?

What?s next for Jagger? He said he?s on a minivacation on the East Coast with his kids, and they were heading out the door to play soccer.

But will the Stones get together this year for a 50th anniversary tour?

?I hope we certainly do something,? he said. ?It would be very appropriate, I think, and I look forward to doing something. But nothing is yet booked.?

Jagger and other blues greats played the East Room on Tuesday as part of an ?In Performance at the White House? concert that will air Monday on PBS.

Public still opposes auto bailout, poll finds

While the U.S. auto industry may be ?back,? as President Barack Obama recently declared during his State-of-the-Union address, that hasn?t changed the fact that a majority of Americans remain opposed to the 2008 ? 2009 bailout of Detroit.

A new Gallup poll finds 51 percent of those surveyed still disapprove of the $85 billion rescue effort, with only 44 percent?saying they approve.? And the figure is even more lopsided when party affiliation is consideredD.? The poll, conducted for the public radio program Marketplace, found 73 percent?of Republicans opposed ? though 63?percent?of Democrats were supportive of the bailout.

Americans keeping cars longer than ever

Though the results are still in negative territory, overall, that?s still a significant improvement from 2009, when various polls?showed that the vast majority of Americans, regardless of political persuasion, were unhappy with the use of taxpayer money to save General Motors and Chrysler.

The numbers have been slowly moving back into positive territory, various surveys have found, especially as the two once-bankrupt makers have started posting solid earnings again ? and have been adding thousands of new jobs.? On the other hand, reports that the U.S. Treasury could still lose perhaps $20 billion on the bailout ? especially if GM?s stock price doesn?t rebound ? continues to throw up a red flag.

And the GOP presidential contenders all but trip over one another in debates and stump speeches, to turn the bailout into a liability for President Barack Obama.

During a Wednesday night Republican debate in Phoenix, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney said, ?I think it was 2008, President Bush was still in office. And the three chief executive officers of the three major auto companies got in their private planes and flew to Washington, and said: please write us a check. I think they wanted $50 billion. And I wrote an op-ed in the paper and I said: absolutely not. Don?t write a check for $50 billion.?

While the bailout is likely to remain a subject of contention for some time, the new Gallup poll isn?t entirely negative for the auto industry overall.

?There was a time when the auto industry and our positive/negative image ratings was down at minus 35; that was in 2009,? said Gallup editor-in-chief Frank Newport. ?In fact, it was second only to the oil and gas industry, which interestingly ? perennially ? pulled up the bottom on that.?

Now, he noted, the auto industry is back in positive territory, with a plus-10 rating.? That?s still well below the image of the computer industry but well ahead of oil and gas ? and the federal government, which now ranks dead last.

Palin aides lash out at HBO's 'Game Change' (omg!)

JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) ? Current and former aides to Sarah Palin lashed out Wednesday at HBO's "Game Change," describing the upcoming film's depictions of her on the 2008 campaign trail as "sick" and inaccurate.

None of the aides said they have yet seen the movie, which debuts March 10, and some said they had asked for an opportunity to screen the film but had been denied.

Trailers for the film, which is based on the bestselling book chronicling the 2008 presidential race, have been released, however, and some snippets appear to cast Palin in an unfavorable light. As portrayed by Julianne Moore, Palin is seen complaining about how she's being handled by political advisers and mumbling about missing her baby, who was born in April 2008. In one snippet, campaign strategist Steve Schmidt, portrayed by Woody Harrelson, describes her as being on the verge of a nervous breakdown.

Aides said none of that jibes with their own experiences with the former Alaska governor, and they defended her vigorously Wednesday.

Jason Recher, who handled vice presidential road operations for the McCain-Palin campaign, called Palin "one of the most engaged public servants I'd ever observed." Tom Van Flein, her former personal attorney, called her diligent, sharp and enthusiastic about the campaign.

Meg Stapleton, a former spokeswoman, said that she, unlike some of the others who worked with Palin during the campaign, had not been contacted by anyone associated with either the book or movie.

"They don't want to hear anything good," she said, her voice full of passion. "We all know Palin sells and the dramatization of Palin sells even more. This is sick."

"They mock Gov. Palin, you mock Gov. Palin, as weak and unable to cope and press forward," she told reporters on the conference call. "And the movie and the trailer ... say that. And yet look with your own eyes at what she and her family have endured and inspired over the last few years. Any lesser man would have hanged himself by now. So who's weak?"

Recher noted that Palin wasn't the primary focus of the book, and he said he told screenwriter and co-executive producer Danny Strong that the book "absolutely, unequivocally" did not accurately reflect his time with the McCain campaign.

Filmmakers have said that they sought historical accuracy.

Director Jay Roach last month said he wrote a long letter to Palin seeking an interview with her to help the film, "but I got a very quick email back from her attorney saying, 'I checked, she declined.'"

Strong, in an email, acknowledged that members of Palin's camp asked to screen the film but said filmmakers responded that they would privately screen the movie for Palin and her husband. He said Sarah Palin declined the offer.

The film portrays Palin "in a balanced light," he said, "showing her strengths and weaknesses as the vice presidential candidate."

In addition to the book, Strong said the movie is also based on 25 interviews conducted with members of the campaign by himself and Roach. He said secondary sources include Sarah Palin's book "Going Rogue," other books written on the campaign and "innumerable" newspaper and magazine articles.

A new report reveals that Android's global takeover may reach a fever pitch by 2015, when it may account for 80 percent of developing markets, in countries such as Africa, India and China.

The lower-costing Android smartphones will be the ones with the most potential for landing in consumers' hands in these markets, according to In-Stat, part of the NDP research group.?

In a summary of the report, In-Stat states elaborates on those phones:

The low-cost Android smartphone segment is comprised primarily of smartphones released with Android 2.2 or 2.3, since these versions are a good blend of features with modest memory and processor usage. The low-end low-cost smartphones generally stick with EDGE and processors running at 600MHz or lower, because a single-core EDGE chip sells for well under $10. For our purposes, low-cost means smartphones that are $150 or less. Smaller phone manufacturers will sometimes purchase from the ?gray market? where component manufacturers typically don't pay licensing fees, royalties, or taxes for the products they produce. Early competitors in the market include Huawei, MicroMax, Motorola, Samsung, Spice and ZTE.

In-Stat predicts that 340 million units of these phones will ship worldwide in 2015, and that their presence may very well disrupt Google's plan for unified upgrades and continue the fragmentation that has plagued the operating system. There is also continuing problems with app infections of the open source system, though Google is trying to counter those intruders with increased security measures.

But first, Android has to continue to duke it out with iPhones, which surged in sales amongst smartphone buyers late in 2011 with the introduction of the Siri-sensationalized iPhone 4S. I'm new here, and here's a little about me. I'm a 24 year old attractive woman who is active duty military (home-ported) and new here so I am on a light schedule 2 days work 2 days off etc etc. So I am home a great deal of time, and when I am not I am only 2 miles away from our home.

My husband is 26 years old and is a retired army vet who sustained injuries causeing him to be medically disabled, he isnt in a wheelchair or anything, he's physically capable of doing things just his medical problems ake it nearly impossible to sustain a traditional civilian job so he is at home.

When we were dating, before we were married he had no addictions, he had an xbox and rarely used it, maybe he'd get onlineto play with friends he knew IRL from time to time but it was nothing major and I considered that normal. Now he has "friends" he made while playing the game and acts as if they "depend" on him to play with them to level up or whatever.

After I got out of bootcamp we gpt married and moved to michigan where I am stationed. The first few months here were rocky, he's go to the casino from time to time and spend large amounts of money when we didnt have things for our house that we wanted. Well, we fixed that by talking it over and creating a budgeting system. So that problem is gone, or its just way too cold out for him to want to go anywhere.

Recently, he bought the COD MW3 game and it feels like thats all she wrote. He no longer/rarely calls/texts me while I'm on duty at work. And when I'm home he'll get on there and 4 or more hours will go by leaving me to feel as if I shouldnt have come home in the first place. We'll be watching a movie on netflix or hulu and he'll say something like "oh so and so's on" like he wants to stop what we're doing and do that.

I feel like I'm here in real life so I should be more important. I'm hurt, I feel ignored and discarded as he is also increasingly moody if I ask him to do something non-game related. I'm hoping this is just a phase, like a new toy thing children go through because I have no idea what to do if it lasts. Please offer any advice possible and if your SO went through this game or something similar how long did it last?

The last 2 days I was home he was "normal" like maybe played an hour or 2 each day, but today I'm back at work and hadn't heard squat from him until about 5pm. Am I a bad wife or something because I work and we dont have children? This whole situation just depresses the crap out of me.
