Cat Health: Fur, Skin Questions About Your Pet Answered

6 seconds ago (11:45 PM)

I have a cat that I stopped a friend from putting to sleep, a couple of years ago. I've never been a cat person until I got her. I can't afford to take her to the vet, so does anyone know if there is anyway of treating these fleas or Cheyletiella mites? She doesn't go outside, but she does itch a lot.
One more question. She's almost 9 and she's used to her one brand of food. When we first got her, I went through three different kinds until I got her the right kind. My daughter noticed that the food we give her (A top name brand) has a lot of additives and not too much real food. How do we put her on a better diet of food if she won't eat? If it's not her type, she won't eat it!

Thanks for any help I can get.

Our kitty guy got acne on his chin. Turns out he was allergic to the plastic on the water fountain we had gotten. We switched to metal bowls, and there hasn't been a problem since.

My cat has dry, thick clumpy fur and dandruff. I've tried everything. I give her the best food (Earthborn), make sure she has wet food with water (so she doesn't get dehyrated) as well as dry, always make sure she has clean water, clean the litterbox every day. I give her a brushing every week with the "furminator." The only thing I can think of is that she doesn't get enough exercise. She just hangs out most of the time in her cat tree.

One of my friend's cats was losing fur and was quite naked before her vet finally figured out the kitty had allergies/asthma. They gave her the right type of food and steroids, and now kitty is SUPER fluffy. She is back to her normal, happy self.

Unnnnh, no decent person just "gets rid of" an animal.

No intelligent person just "gets" an animal they are allergic to - let alone four. But hey if you think my sister is stooopid for getting a bunch of cats that she is allergic to I would tend to agree. Getting rid of the thing typically involves pawning the thing off on your friends. Doesn't sound all that cool. Okay, would you feel better if I suggested eliminating the cat from the household?

Itchy ears can also denote the presence of polyps, which some cats are prone to developing, even down the ear canal and into the throat. My male cat has this problem, which leads to him occasionally scratching his ears. Recently, he had an upper respiratory infection which caused him to sneeze, spasm and crouch down on the floor in order to access more oxygen for easier breathing. The x-rays two weeks ago showed a great deal of gas in his system, due to that. He also had a lot of nasal excretion during the sneezing episodes, and his coat was dull and dehydrated. My veterinarian gave him an injection of Convenia, an antibiotic which works in the system for two weeks, and prescribed a tincture of azithromycin. I made sure it was 'fish-flavored' to make it more palatable for him. Long story short: the one-two punch of these antiobiotics has eliminated the spasms, all but reduced the constant sneezing, and his nasal passages are clear. My boy's coat is also silky, hydrated and shiny now, and he's back to his old, frisky sixteen year-old self. We don't know the extent of the polyps down the throat canal, and the vet and I agreed that we won't put him through any unnecessary surgery at his age; he is basically healthy again, and those are the results I was so looking for. It makes me very happy to see him alert and active as usual.
