LONDON?Forget what you think you know about international soccer. If there's one lesson to take from the opening rounds of the men's tournament at the London Games, it's that when it comes to the Olympics, the usual rules governing the world's most popular sport no longer apply.

Spain, the reigning World Cup and European champion, was eliminated from the Olympics on Sunday with a 1-0 loss to Honduras.

In a stunning upset Sunday, Spain was sent home from the Olympics with a 1-0 loss to Honduras, eliminating one of the gold-medal favorites at the group stage and ending Spain's bid to become the first nation to hold the World Cup, European and Olympic soccer titles at the same time.

The decisive moment came in the seventh minute, when the Honduras midfielder Roger Espinoza crossed from the left, and Jerry Bengtson jumped above Jordi Alba to power a header past Spanish goalkeeper David de Gea.

For Spain, the defeat was a rare and unexpected setback. The Spanish have dominated international soccer at senior, Under-21, Under-19 and Under-17 levels in recent years. And this team included four members of triumphant Euro 2012 squad in their 18-man party for the Olympics. But despite controlling both its games with the possession-oriented approach that has become the country's calling card, Spain struggled to convert its chances, crashing out of the event without scoring a single goal.

As the clock ticked down against Honduras?and the local fans serenaded the Spanish with shouts of "You're going home in the morning"?Spain's frustration briefly boiled over. Substitutes from the two teams squared up to each other in the tunnel at halftime. By the end of the ill-tempered game at St. James' Park in Newcastle, England, seven Spanish players had received yellow cards.

"It was an important match, and there was dispute among players, which can happen in such a match," said Luis Milla, the Spain coach. "It's possible that the pressure had an impact, but this is a team full of players that have played at the highest level. As you can imagine, everyone is very sad and very disappointed."

Spain's defeat wasn't the only surprise on another unpredictable night of Olympic soccer. In London, Uruguay lost 2-0 to Senegal, pushing another medal contender toward an early exit. For all the surprise caused by Uruguay and Spain's defeats, the bigger shock may be that Britain avoided disaster against UAE. The home nation appeared destined for a dispiriting result when Rashed Eisa's 60th-minute goal leveled the score at 1-1 following Ryan Giggs's first-half opener. At the time, UAE looked the more likely team to find a winning goal.

But the game was turned by two substitutes. In the 73rd minute, Craig Bellamy's low cross from the right was spilled by UAE goalkeeper Ali Khaseif, allowing Scott Sinclair to tap the ball into an empty net from six yards out. The goal came on Sinclair's first touch. In fact, he had just taken the field 60 seconds earlier as a replacement for Giggs, the British captain. Daniel Sturridge, a halftime substitute, put the match away with another goal three minutes later. He gathered a through ball and finished the breakaway and the game with a lob over Khaseif.

"I was delighted with the impact the pair of them had," Great Britain coach Stuart Pearce said. "The only way players who haven't started the game can really make an impact is by delivering a performance when they come off the bench. I thought they were both outstanding."

In other Olympic action, Brazil beat Belarus 3-1 at Old Trafford, thanks to goals from Alexandre Pato, Neymar and Oscar. In this wild and unpredictable tournament, Pearce said the only certainty is that any team with ambitions of winning the gold medal will have to come up with a way to beat Brazil. "I've not seen anything to suggest that any team that beats Brazil will not win the final," Pearce said. "But we won't look any further than our next game. I don't think in this tournament you can afford to do that."

a. Most recent W2 form

d. Note from previous loan closing on subject property
e. Settlement Statement from previous loan closing on subject property
f. Most recent 2 months bank statements

Step 4: Complete file is submitted to new VA lender?s underwriting department for final approval

As you can see, this process is MUCH simpler than the process that a veteran goes through to close on their original purchase home loan application/process. ?In most cases no appraisal is required. ?The veteran?s lender typically does not need to verify income either. ?The only time a veteran must verify income is if they are shortening the term of their loan and their streamline refi results in an increased monthly payment.

Once the veteran?s file has been fully approved by the new VA lender?s underwriting department final/official loan documents are sent to a pre-selected title company so the veteran can sign and close. ?If the property being refinanced is a primary residence the veteran will need to wait out a 3 day rescission period before their loan can close. ?Essentially this means that 3 days must pass after the veteran signs before the loan can close/fund (Sundays and Holidays do not count).

The best thing by far, however, are the interviews with actual east Texans who knew the real Bernie. Somehow Linklater is able to get these people to express themselves on camera, using their wildly colorful local slang, and I howled out loud many times. But it's not a very strong statement about the film that the interviews are the best part.

Ottawa's deficit shrinks as tax income rises - Financial Post

OTTAWA ? With much of the world paralyzed by debt and sinking into recession, Canada is continuing down a different path of deficit reduction and modicum growth.

So far, the federal government?s balancing act is tilting favourably toward its budget estimates ? even though the economy is still slowing and leading to calls for Ottawa to consider spending more and cutting less.

Two months into fiscal 2012-13, the budget deficit stands at $832-million, down from $2-billion for the same period a year earlier, according to initial estimates released Friday by the Finance Department.

Revenue rose by $2-billion, or 5%, to $42.2-billion during April and May as income from personal and corporate taxes rose, along with employment insurance premium increases. Expenses during the same period were up by $1.2-billion, or 3.4%, to $37.8-billion, with transfer payments accounting for much of the increase.

Avery Shenfeld, chief economist at CIBC World Markets, said ?you have to be a little cautious about comparing a short number of months to a short number of months. The timing of when you make major purchases, and when tax revenues come in can shift a bit from year to year.

?Nevertheless, there?s lots of reasons to believe they?re positioned well to meet their targets for deficit reduction.?

Ottawa finished fiscal 2011-12, which ended March 31, with a $23.5-billion deficit, and it expects a shortfall of $21.1-billion for 2012-13.

In its March budget, the government projected the 2013-14 deficit at $10.2 billion, falling to $1.3 billion the following year.

The government expects to return to a surplus, of about $3.4-billion, in 2015-16 and see that increase to $7.8-billion a year later.

To balance the books, Ottawa is cutting programs and reducing the public service, while relying on economic growth ? though tepid ? to do the rest. The plans call for $5.2-billion in spending cuts and the elimination of 19,200 jobs over three years.

Those austerity measures have come under fire by organizations that say the cuts will lead to many more jobs losses than thought and pose a threat to economic growth.

The Canadian Centre of Policy Alternatives has calculated that more than 68,000 public sectors positions could be lost by 2015-16. As well, two of the world?s biggest rating agencies ? Moody?s and Fitch ? have warned the measures were unnecessary, and that cuts made too quickly and too deeply will actually hurt the economy.

This week, the London-based Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, said a survey on the state of the global economy found its Canadian members ?feel that Canada is increasingly pursuing an unsustainable austerity program.?

?Whatever the debate internally in Canada, the country is seen as really quite safe from the outside, as far as bond markets are concerned,? said Emmanouil Schizas, the group?s senior global policy advisor.

?The argument that you get in these situations is: You know that yields are quite low. We might not have it this good for a while, so why not borrow now and invest in infrastructure or other sorts of public investments? Why not do that now while we can afford it?? Mr. Schizas said in an interview from London.

CIBC?s Mr. Shenfeld said the government is making ?tremendous progress? reducing the deficit, ?in part, because of the interest costs they?re paying on their debt are giving a pleasant surprise.?

?Should the global economy falter, it does give Canada room to increase infrastructure spending by borrowing at very low rates and putting Canadians back to work again.?

Tanning Beds Linked to 1 in 20 Cases of Skin Cancer

July 27, 2012 ? A European study published July 24 in the British Medical Journal has found that women who use tanning beds are 20% more likely to develop skin cancer, and that risk increases 87% when they start tanning before age 35. The study also found that about one in 20 cases of melanoma (the most lethal form of skin cancer) is associated with the use of tanning beds.

The researchers? conclusion was based on a meta-analysis of 27 different studies that were published between 1981 and 2012. The researchers pooled the data and looked for trends linking tanning beds to skin cancer. More than 11,000 people had skin cancer in the studies.

There was an 87% increased risk of skin cancer for people who used tanning beds before age 35, and that risk was increased by nearly 2% for each tanning session per year. The researchers estimated that in 2008, tanning beds caused 3,438 cases of melanoma and nearly 800 deaths in Europe.

They warned ?sunbed use is associated with a significant increase in risk of melanoma. This risk increases with number of sunbed sessions and with initial usage at a young age (< 35 years). The cancerous damage associated with sunbed use is substantial and could be avoided by strict regulations.?

Researchers are calling tanning beds carcinogenic devices that should not be used by anyone, but especially teenagers and children, who may be more susceptible to skin cancer. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is also considering a ban on tanning beds for anyone under 18 years of age. Such bans already exist in Brazil and other countries.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo recently signed a bill banning indoor tanning beds for children under 17, and teenagers between 17 and 18 must gain parental consent before they are allowed to use the devices. The governor cited concerns over UV exposure in young teenagers and children.

Many states already require tanning salons to keep strict records of their customers, including the date of each session, the patient?s skin type, type of equipment, and length of exposure. This helps public health inspectors determine whether the salon is complying with regulations. However, these requirements are not mandatory in all states.

Melanoma is a dangerous, life-threatening type of skin cancer that occurs when skin cells have cellular DNA damage. This damage can be induced by UV radiation from sunlight or tanning bed exposure.

A-Rod breaks hand, Seattle beats Yankees 4-2

SEATTLE (AP) ? Even as Alex Rodriguez writhed on the ground in pain, he didn't believe his left hand was fractured.

Turns out A-Rod was wrong, and now the Yankees will be without another of their star players.

"It's difficult. Tough break," Rodriguez said in almost a hushed tone after New York lost to the Seattle Mariners 4-2 Tuesday night.

Rodriguez broke his hand when he was hit by an 88 mph changeup from Felix Hernandez in the eighth inning. He went down in considerable pain. The Yankees said he has a non-displaced fracture of the hand, and there is no timetable for his return. He will be placed on the disabled list and will remain in Seattle with the team for the series finale Wednesday.

Eric Chavez, Rodriguez's replacement at third base, had a similar injury in 2004. He was out for about five weeks.

"You hate to see a guy go down on something freak like that," Yankees' first baseman Mark Teixeira said. "I had a weird feeling it wasn't good."

Rodriguez was the last of three Yankees to get plunked in a five-batter stretch and that ended Hernandez's night. He also hit Ichiro Suzuki and Derek Jeter with pitches.

While not sharp, Hernandez had allowed only Curtis Granderson's first-inning home run and worked out of jams in the fourth and fifth innings.

The sudden loss of control started when Hernandez hit former teammate Suzuki on the foot with a breaking ball in the seventh. He then hit Jeter in the arm to open the eighth and completed the trio when his 3-2 pitch to Rodriguez tailed up and in.

None of the Yankees felt any of the wayward pitches were intentional and Hernandez was apologetic.

"It was getting away. It was a changeup to A-Rod," Hernandez said. "I feel bad.

Rodriguez has been durable this season after failing to play at least 150 games since 2007. He had played in all but three of the Yankees 97 games this year after playing just 99 last season.

But A-Rod's production has fallen way off. He was hitting just .274 with 15 homers and 44 RBIs entering Tuesday's game, although he was hitting .328 over his last 16 games.

With the acquisition of Suzuki on Monday to take over for injured left-fielder Brett Gardner, the Yankees appeared to be done with any big moves before the non-waiver trade deadline in a week. Losing A-Rod, though, could change that. New York's main option at third base now is the injury-prone Chavez.

"We'll just have to talk about it and see what we come up with," Chavez said. "Whatever he asks me to do I'll just give it my best shot."

Rodriguez joins Andy Pettitte, Mariano Rivera, Michael Pineda and Gardner as key pieces of the Yankees puzzle who have missed time with injuries.

Whatever the time-frame on Rodriguez, it's one more obstacle for the Yankees to overcome. They do have the luxury of a seven-game lead in the AL East, even with their recent West Coast slump.

"You find out how good you are. Other guys are going to have to step up. We can't feel sorry for ourselves because no one else is going to," Jeter said. "It's going to be a challenge, but it's been a challenge for all the injuries we've had this season."

Lost in the concern over Rodriguez was starter Freddy Garcia (4-4) looking more like the 2001 version that won 18 games with the Mariners and was an All-Star. Garcia struck out a season-high eight and retired the final 15 he faced before being pulled with one out in the eighth.

But Garcia was pitching from behind after the Yankees offense failed in getting to Hernandez in both the fourth and fifth innings when New York had runners in scoring position and couldn't get clutch hits. Teixeira added a sacrifice fly in the eighth, but reliever Lucas Luetge struck out Raul Ibanez with two on to end the threat.

That was all secondary to what the absence of Rodriguez will mean for the Yankees.

"We're going to have to change it around a little," manager Joe Girardi said. "He had been swinging the bat really good too. We've had to overcome some things so far, we're just going to have to continue to do it."

ABSTRACT

Background/Aims: Thrombocytosis had been found to be associated with tumor metastasis and poor prognosis in malignant tumors including colorectal cancer (CRC). In the present study, we investigated the relationship between the platelet and the biological features in patients with CRC in China. Methodology: The correlation of platelet counts of 150 cases with CRC with their clinicopathological characteristics was explored. Furthermore, the survival impact of preoperative platelet count was also investigated. Results: Statistically significant correlations between the platelet count and the lymph node and distance metastasis (p=0.016 and 0.014), vascular and perinural invasion (p=0.025 and 0.016) as well as TNM clinical stages (p=0.014) except for the age, gender and grades (p=0.245, 0.276 and 0.324, respectively) were found. In addition, 5-year survival of patients with high platelet count and normal platelet count were 13.30% and 56.30%, respectively (p=0.000). Meanwhile, concurrent with lymph node and distance metastasis, perinural invasion and clinical stages (p=0.000, 0.022, 0.034 and 0.000), platelet count (p=0.010) was also found to be an independent prognostic factor in CRC in our study through multivariate analysis.
Conclusions: Elevated platelet might play some role in the progress of CRC and preoperative platelet count might be a prognostic indicator in the CRC patients.

Three civilian contractors were killed by a gunman wearing an Afghan national security force uniform on Sunday.

The artillery shells hit homes along frontier areas from which insurgents have in the past staged cross-border attacks.

According to Reuters, the latest rogue shooting by an Afghan occurred at a regional training center in the relatively peaceful western province near Afghanistan's border with Iran.

"An individual wearing an Afghan National Security Force uniform turned his weapon against ISAF contracted civilian employees in western Afghanistan today, killing three," a spokesman for the NATO-led coalition said.

An unknown number of other people had been wounded, he said.

"Also, one insurgent was killed in the engagement and we are still looking for one more shooter."

All five of the NATO service members, meantime, were killed in roadside bomb attacks ? one on Saturday and four on Sunday.

The deaths bring the number of foreign forces killed in July to 32, and the total for this year to 247 so far, the AP reported.

?That then allows us to extend their lifetime,? John Dabiri, a professor of aeronautics and bioengineering at the California Institute of Technology, told me.

The breakthrough is a big step toward the development of an artificial human heart with living cells. It also opens a window to a future where humans could loosen the constraints of evolution.

?The design of the heart that we have today is by no means the best physically possible design,? Dabiri said. ?It is the one that evolution stumbled onto over the course of millions of years of random searching.?

It?s possible, perhaps probable, that there?s a better design out there for humans to discover. An artificial heart, for example, could be engineered to steer clear of heart disease, the leading cause of death in the U.S.

Building a better pump
To get there, though, scientists must first understand how biology assembles its building blocks into a?pump, Dabiri noted.?

?We know pretty well how to build engineered pumps, things that are built out of steel and aluminum and so on,? he said. ?We don?t have as good a handle right now in biology on how nature builds things out of muscle tissues.?

To start, they looked to the jellyfish, an example of a simple biological pump, and tried to build it in the lab from scratch.

Jellyfish essentially have two parts: muscle cells that squeeze down on the body, pushing out water and jetting the animal the opposite way, and elastic stretchy tissue (the jelly) that gently recovers to its relaxed shape after each pump.

?In our engineered system, we needed to have these two components,? Dabiri explained.?

When the team put the engineered jellyfish into a pool of ionized water and sent an electric signal through the water, the fish swam like a real jellyfish.

?We haven?t yet developed an internal pacemaking system within these artificial jellyfish, so the way that we control the functioning is, we shock them,? Dabiri explained.
