Wii U's Success is All About the Games, Not the Specs - Zelda Informer

I run around various parts of the internet every day digging up stories, finding little factoids, and searching for the most interesting topics to bring to light for the entire ZI crowd and our extended communities reach. We like to bring you the best news and information we can, regardless of if it?s good news or bad. Setting aside the usual launch bugs we always get when a new console releases, the one big residing argument against the Wii U right now seems to be how a few third party developers have been pointing to the Wii U?s CPU as being too slow, and if they feel it?s too slow now? how will the Wii U be able to even compete when the PS4 and 720 hit store shelves?

Indeed, it?s a bit of a worrisome tale, and of course it?s something I follow closely. I like video games - I am not a Nintendo apologist. I do like pretty looking things, and since I care enough about pretty looking things I often play a few titles every year on my PC. I just prefer certain games that way because it provides a superior overall experience. Both visually, and with the freedom of gameplay that the PC allows. The PC ?Master Race? if it were. I also enjoy games on home consoles. Unfortunately as a gamer, I can?t get everything I want on one console. Exclusives are abundant, and since I?m not the richest person in the world, I tend to lean towards Nintendo. I just need that flavor of gaming in my life. I do own a 360, so it?s not like I am not willing to try out other consoles along the way, but in the end Nintendo gets more of my money than other companies.

You see, when you examine the Wii U so many people are squarely focused on if it?s the next Wii, or if it can truly compete and win back gamers it has lost. It?s a fair debate, and I understand that technical specifications are going to play a role in this sort of affair. What I don?t understand is why we seem to be wasting so much time talking about what the Wii U ?can?t? do, as it were, instead of talking about what really matters: Games. For any console to succeed, it needs games to support it.

When the PS3 launched it carried a meager 12 titles. Of those twelve titles, only two of them were console exclusives. Resistance: Fall of Man (metascore of 86) and Genji: Days of the Blade (metascore of 55). When the Xbox 360 launched,? it carried with it 18 launch titles. None of them were even remotely noteworthy. (remember, I could be a bit off on some things with the PS3, it is the one console I don?t own, only play at friends houses)

When the Wii launched, it boasted 23 titles, several of which got rather solid ratings. Obviously of course, Twilight Princess, a GameCube port, lead the way and Wii Sports helped usher in a whole new era of gamers. Third parties gravitated to the 360 and the PS3 because of the lack of a classic controller option, poor online, and lack of graphical fidelity on the Wii. Sure, some superb third party content did make it?s way to the Wii (Mad World, No More Heroes, Monster Hunter Tri, etc), but we all know the story.? Did you want the real Call of Duty experience? Better pick up a different console. What about Dragon Age? Skyrim? Again, Nintendo?s system couldn?t deliver those experiences. So, needless to say I understand that graphical fidelity is an important part of gaming. I am not blind to this.

I go out of my way to point all this out because, frankly, it?s tiring hearing about all the things the Wii U can?t do. You know what it can do? This:

?

Remember when we all saw this and was like ?holy crap?. Yeah well, I still can?t keep my underwear clean. No, this isn?t the most visually stunning thing I have ever seen. Maybe for some it?s just not good enough. For me? Couple this with some fantastic gameplay, and immersive world, and a top notch story? and what you see above will do for me just dandy. This, folks, is where Nintendo?s mantra on ?gameplay over graphics? steps in.

The Wii U wont be a graphic power house this generation (I say this generation, because the Wii U is the start of a generation of which it is still waiting on it?s competitors), but what it will do is deliver fantastical first party experiences to the likes of which gamers have never seen. Sure, maybe Uncharted 80 1/4, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 56, and other console exclusive titles are going to blow the socks off the Wii U. However,? you can?t tell me that the gaming engines of tomorrow, like Unreal 4, can?t run on the Wii U. In fact, just because the games aren?t as visually stunning on a 360 compared to the PS3 never stopped people from buying the game on the 360.

So sure, maybe third party content wont look as good as the other consoles, but as long as the games themselves are fantastic will it really matter that much? The Wii U can display in 1080p. That?s still going to be the standard resolution the next 5 years. So, sure, the other games may get closer to making stuff look real, but in the end it really comes down to the games presented. If you are heavily into PlayStation exclusive content, more power to you. I have nothing against Uncharted, God of War, Little Big Planet, or any of the other excellent offers. Gears of War and Halo are pretty solid experiences, even if I don?t think they are the best at what they do (I?ll take borderlands any day over those two games).

I like pretty looking things. But I?ll take excellent games over excellent realistic graphics any day. Maybe Nintendo doesn?t get third parties, but they sure as hell gets me.
