EXCITEMENT is growing as entries for the Badminton Horse Trials in England pour in.
The prestigious event is slated for May 6, with 141 entries (91 already accepted) from around the world.
Horses and riders are accepted based on FEI points accumulated at three- and four-star events in the past two years. On average, about 32 other horse/rider combinations will be accepted from the waiting list.
This year?s entries include some well-known newcomers to Badminton. Germany?s Olympic gold medalist Michael Jung will make his d?but riding his Olympic horse, La Biosthetique?Sam FBW, and last year?s horse, Luhmuhlen CCi winner Leopin FST. If Jung wins Badminton on his first
attempt, he will join Mark Todd of New Zealand, who triumphed on his first
attempt in 1980.
Three more of the German team are also competing: Sandra Auffarth, also her first time at Badminton on Opgunlouva; Dirk Schrade with King Artus and Hop and Skip; and Ingrid Klimke, who was second at Badminton in 2006 on Sleep Late. She will be riding FRH Butts Abraxxas.
The entire British Olympic silver medal team will be competing, including Nicola Wilson on Opposition Buzz. She has been in the top eight finishers three times. Zara Phillips will ride High Kingdom on his d?but ride at Badminton.
Tina King is hoping for a completion on Miners Frolic. She has another ride on De Novo News. Mary King, who has won before at Badminton, has a choice of three rides: Imperial Cavalier, King?s Temptress and Fernhill Urco, who all have strong four star results in the past.
William Fox?Pitt, another former champion, has five horses to ride: Lionheart; Bramham winner Chilli Morning; World Silver medalist Cool Mountain; Burghley and Kentucky winner Parklane Hawk; and Oslo, the 2011 Pau winner who is returning from an injury.
New Zealand?s Olympic bronze medalists Andrew Nicholson, Mark Todd, Jock Paget and Caroline Powell will be aiming to win on their bold horses.
Some other respected riders who have won in the past will also be competing: Paul Tapner, Pippa Funnell, and Oliver Townsend. Lucinda Fredericks was entered but was injured in a fall on March 7, in which she broke seven ribs and her collarbone.
