Stages Of A Relationship - Get back with your ex today!

Though love can feel like a rush of emotion and as if it is happening very quickly, your mind and body actually goes through stages when it comes to falling in love. There is great controversy over what these stages are and how they progress, with no true resolution. However, the following defines the basic stages that you can expect to feel when going from acquaintances to true love.

Use this as your guide toward understanding the emotions you and your partner or feeling or the conflicts that you face. Knowing that you are not alone or that what you are going through is normal may be all you need to know in order to push onto the next phase of love.

The Beginnings

In the beginning, relationships that may evolve into love are rooted in a sense of romanticism and the feelings that imbue us with a sense of hope and awe. It is the time in the relationship when two people tend to focus on an idealistic version of another. That is, the differences seem small and the commonalities between seem minute. Passion seems to be everywhere and conflict at a minimum.

There is a scientific basis for this reaction and causation of the butterflies-in-your stomach, rather than a simple emotional response. The body in this stage of falling in love actually produces extra chemicals which cause a heightened feeling of pleasure. It has been deemed intoxicating and allows for the release of endorphins that fill our bodies with the euphoric feeling that makes us giddy. The problem with this phase is that it only has a short shelf-life. Euphoria may not last in this state for very long.

The overlooking of differences and the chemical response will only be present in the body for a few months and then the next phase has to be conquered. Remembering these days and these moments of initial pleasure, though, may help through the more difficult stages of a relationship.

Battling

Battling is a part of life and it is a part of love. In the next stage, the glossy finish that is placed on the picture of love in the first phases is dissipating. There is recognition of the differences between individuals and the similarities can get lost among the now more apparent conflicts in points of view and characteristics. The reason for this seeming descent is the fact that our minds are returning to their original states.

No more are the chemicals infusing our minds and our lives but brain chemistry is returning to normal. The result is a potential for arguments and disagreements. It is not impossible for this battling to be overcome. Rather, a couple that is willing to stick it out can overcome these differences and conflicts. It is actually a great chance to hone problem solving skills and the ability to really listen to others point of view. Though it may take work and not all couples will survive this jockeying phase, those who do will be ready to enter the next phase of love.

Refocusing

The next stage in the process of falling in to true and lasting love is a period of refocusing. In this phase, individuals will re-evaluate their relationship as well as the position they hold in it. There can be a feeling a fear and introspection. There can be a feeling of isolation that can take over with each partner leading what seem more like dual lives than a symbiotic relationship. Again, at this stage, there is the risk that the relationship may be over, however, it can also be a chance for personal growth that will help in the next phase of the relationship or following in everlasting love.

Reconnection

The next phase comes as a time of rebirth or reconnection. Individuals, who may have drifted apart, come together through hard work and a level of self-awareness developed in the previous phase. There is recognition that the relationship will take work, and a desire to achieve this work. Partners will come together as a team and really communicate about their feelings. There is a clearer delineation of boundaries and yet a common recognition that communal actions need to take place as well.

Partners will work on themselves, recognizing that they have issues to correct rather than displacing those feelings on their partners. This process can be difficult but it is no less rewarding to those who are willing to stick it out and make it work with one another. Differences in each other are not seen as a hindrance but a starting point upon which to build and grow.

Balance Reached

In the end phase of love or when harmony has been reached, partners will come to a balance in the relationship. There is a recognition of each individual?s autonomy and yet the support they require from their partner. They rely on each other with the recognition of their own paths.

Disagreements do still arise as will occur in any level and phase of a relationship, but these different conflicts can be easily overcome because of the skills the partners have gained in the other phases of the relationship. Teamwork is the essential to navigating through this phase and individuals can officially say that they are in true love. Only a minute amount of couples make it to this phase, less than ten percent, but those who do can reap everlasting rewards in love.

Review

Again, the above information is not a set guide to the stages of love but an overview. There is no doubt that love does not happen without work and these phases demonstrate that. Individuals in a couple must be willing to take the time to learn and grow with each other. They must have the fortitude to move beyond the difficulties in order to find a realistic and true love. Those who do have said that it is all worth it in the end but it does take effort on everyone?s part involved in the relationship.

Love relationships are necessary to make life worth living, and every participant must be ready to make changes for the benefit of the other partner. As a man, you should be ready to do this while your partner is always doing the same. Most ladies are shy, and it is the duty of the man to take her out for a drive to have a good time together. Do things together with her, being her companion instead of a ?dictator?. Doing that strengthens the bond between you and your lady. You could also go for a vacation with her after every few months. This makes her not to be bored, and is also necessary to spend time together, planning your future.

Heat Beat Celtics In Overtime, 115-111: Miami Wins Game 2 Despite Rajon Rondo's 44 Points (VIDEO)

MIAMI ? The biggest postseason comeback in Miami Heat franchise history wasn't enough.

The Heat needed more ? and got it, digging deep to take a 2-0 lead in the Eastern Conference finals.

LeBron James scored 34 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, Dwyane Wade scored 23 and the Heat rallied from 15 down to beat the Boston Celtics 115-111 in overtime on Wednesday night.

Mario Chalmers scored 22 for the Heat, who won despite an unbelievable night by Rajon Rondo. The Celtics guard played all 53 minutes and scored 44 points, dished out 10 assists and grabbed eight rebounds.

Paul Pierce scored 21 points, Kevin Garnett added 18 and Ray Allen 13 for Boston.

Allen's 3-pointer with 34.3 seconds left tied the game at 99-all. James missed two shots, first a layup ? he got the rebound of his own miss ? and then a jumper on the final possession of regulation, and to overtime they went.

Game 3 is Friday in Boston.

The Heat had come back from 14 points down in playoff games twice before, first in Game 6 of the 2006 NBA finals ? their title clincher ? and again last season against Philadelphia.

And this one was slipping away, more than once. James also two free throws 21 seconds into overtime, and Miami looked in trouble.

The scoring dossier in overtime began like this: Rondo scored, Heat tied it, Rondo scored, Heat tied it, Rondo scored, Heat tied it.

When Rondo missed a layup with 1:33 left, Miami took advantage, with Udonis Haslem getting a dunk to put the Heat up 105-103. And after a turnover on the next Boston possession, Wade drove the lane, hit the deck and watched as his layup bounced on the rim and dropped through.

Garnett stood over Wade and glared, to no avail. Wade hit the free throw, and Miami was up 110-105 with 59.7 seconds left.

On a night where the Heat missed 16 free throws ? including at least four by James in crucial situations ? they would survive.

Miami was down by 15 in the first half and by as many as 11 in the third quarter, before a pair of 3-pointers by James started a comeback. Wade made consecutive jumpers midway through the third to shake off a slow start to his night and get the Heat within three both times, and the 2006 NBA finals MVP set up Haslem for a three-point play with 2:55 left that gave Miami its first lead since the opening minutes, 73-71.

As Haslem's shot dropped, Wade spun at midcourt and punched the air. More highlights followed.

Miami's lead got to as much as seven in the third after James blocked Pierce's shot near the rim, sending the ball high into the air and starting a sequence that was capped by a three-point play from Wade, pushing the margin to 78-71. It capped a 12-0 run for the Heat, who took an 81-75 lead into the fourth.

It was the fifth straight game where Miami outscored its opponent by double-digits in the third quarter. In each of the previous four of those outings, Miami never trailed in the final period.

That streak ended in this one.

And a call that Boston argued against played a big role in the Celtics getting the lead back.

James stole the ball from Rondo early in the fourth, drove down the court and got wrapped up by Mickael Pietrus, who was assessed a clear-path foul, meaning Miami got two free throws and the ball. James missed both foul shots, Mike Miller missed a 3-pointer later in the possession, and the lead stayed at 85-81.

Barely a minute later, it was gone. Pietrus hit a 3-pointer, Rondo followed with a steal and layup and Boston led 86-85. The Celtics led by five with 3:50 left after a jumper by Pierce, and the Celtics looked to be in control.

It was temporary. The Heat scored the next nine points, Haslem's jumper with 1:08 remaining put Miami up 98-94. So of course, back came Boston ? Allen's 3-pointer tying the game a few moments after Pierce fouled out.

Early on, it was all Boston. Over the first 15-plus minutes, Boston was shooting 65 percent (15 for 23), Miami 27 percent (7 for 26).

Miami's point guard did his best to keep the Heat close.

Chalmers had 12 in the second quarter and seven in a 14-6 Miami spurt to end the half. He hit a pair of 3-pointers during the flurry, Wade got his first points of the night on a falling-down layup with 27 seconds left and the Heat closed the margin to 53-46 by halftime.

NOTES: Celebrities in attendance included UCLA coach Ben Howland, rapper Flo Rida and former Dolphins quarterback Dan Marino, a regular in the Heat crowd. ... Rondo's other 22-point first half was Feb. 22, 2009 at Phoenix. ... Allen, considered one of the game's absolute best shooters for many years, said he's been getting plenty of unsolicited advice lately on how to get rolling again. "I've only been doing this for 20 years," Allen said at the morning shootaround. ... Haslem (6) had more rebounds than Boston (5) in the third quarter. ... Heat C Ronny Turiaf started, played the first 4:51 and did not return. Joel Anthony started the second half in Turiaf's place.

Common Painkillers May Help Prevent Skin Cancer: Study

TUESDAY, May 29 (HealthDay News) -- Taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) -- which include medicine cabinet staples such as aspirin, Motrin and Aleve -- appears to significantly lower the risk for developing several major forms of skin cancer, a new Danish study reveals.

What's more, the apparent protective impact of both prescription and nonprescription NSAIDs on skin cancer risk seems to be stronger the longer someone takes them.

Over-the-counter NSAIDs are used to control pain, fever and swelling. NSAIDs also include prescription medicines called COX-2 enzyme inhibitors, such as Celebrex (celecoxib).

"Our study showed that users of common painkillers, known as NSAIDs, have a lower risk of the three major types of skin cancer, [including] malignant melanoma, basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma," said study lead author, Sigrun Alba Johannesdottir, at the department of clinical epidemiology at Aarhus University Hospital in Aarhus, Denmark.

"The greatest effect," she noted, "was found for squamous cell carcinomas and malignant melanoma, especially when [these painkillers were] taken frequently and over a long time period."

The study appears in the May 29 online issue of the journal Cancer.

The authors noted that prior work supported the notion that NSAIDs may offer some measure of protection against cancer (most notably colorectal cancer), by specifically impeding the cancer-causing activities of COX-2 (cyclooxygenase) enzymes.

However, the team suggested that past investigations into how NSAIDs may affect skin cancer risk, in particular, had key design problems that undercut efforts to nail down any NSAID-skin cancer connection.

For the new study, the researchers analyzed prescription databases and health information registries including the Danish Cancer Registry and the Danish Civil Registration System.

The team focused on diagnostic and death records concerning nearly 2,000 cases of squamous cell carcinoma, about 13,300 cases of basal cell carcinoma and nearly 3,250 cases of malignant melanoma diagnosed between 1991 and 2009 when the patients were at least 20 years old.

In turn, prescription histories were gathered for both the cancer patient group and almost 179,000 healthy Danes. Records covered the use of both low- and high-dose aspirin (ranging from 75 milligrams to 500 milligrams), so-called "nonselective" NSAIDs (such as ibuprofen [Advil] and naproxen [Aleve]), and both older and newer types of COX-2 inhibitors. Researchers noted the number of prescriptions issued per patient and their length of use, with short-term use defined as fewer than seven years.

The result: The relative risk for squamous cell carcinoma was found to have dropped by 15 percent among those Danes who had filled more than two NSAID prescriptions, compared to those who had filled two or less.

Similarly, malignant melanoma risk fell by nearly as much (13 percent) among those filling more than two NSAID prescriptions.

However, the same dynamic was generally not seen with regards to basal cell carcinoma. But taking NSAIDs for long periods of time, and at relatively high doses, was associated with a reduced risk (between 15 and 21 percent), specifically for basal cell cases that manifested in skin regions that typically experience relatively little sun exposure (areas other than the neck or head).

On that front, long-term users and those who took NSAIDs at relatively higher doses appeared to benefit from the strongest protective effect, suggesting that when it comes to skin cancer risk reduction, more NSAID use is better.

The researchers pointed out that the NSAID-cancer connection could be affected by a range of lifestyle factors they did not account for, such as an individual's specific skin type or sun exposure patterns.

But Johannesdottir added that "we hope that our finding will inspire more research on skin cancer prevention. Also, the potential cancer-protective effect should be taken into account when discussing benefits and harms of NSAID use," she noted.

However, "other studies need to detail the association further and to examine benefits versus risks," she cautioned. "Meanwhile, the most important prevention against skin cancer remains sun protection."

Meanwhile, Dr. William Ting, a private practice dermatologist in San Ramon, Calif., praised the study despite agreeing that many factors are at play when it comes to skin cancer formation.

"Now we have a better understanding that inflammation also plays a significant role in cancer formation and even skin cancers," he said.

And, "this exciting article gives physicians and consumers a relatively simple way of diminishing one's risk of skin cancer by doing what most of us are doing already for heart health," Ting added. Ting also advised that people consult with their doctor before starting on any blood thinner.

While the study found an association between skin cancer risk and NSAIDs, it did not prove a cause-and-effect relationship.

How To Make Your Long Distance Relationship Last |

By Ron Hubbard

Having a long term relationship can be interesting. There are two main types of long term relationships. There are those in a relationship, but they just happen to have to live apart for various reasons after they?ve lived close by each other. The long term goal is to keep the relationship alive and well until they can reunite. Then, there are those couples that live far apart, and they fall in love even though they have distance. These couples have to build on that love and make it work out even though there may be distance for a long time to come. No matter what the case is, if you have an honest, open relationship and can communicate with one another, you can always make long distance relationships work.
Terms

You must establish the terms of your relationship in the beginning. Talk to your partner about what your expectations are and find out what the reality will be. Discuss how and how often you will communicate, and how often you?ll see each other. Decide how you are going to visit each other who will pay for what. Next, make sure you?re on the same page about whether you?re in a monogamous or open relationship.

Communication

Saying I love you can be done in millions of ways, and you should take advantage of this. Text it, phone it, write it, you name it, do it. It might not hurt to get a little sexy either. Also be sure to send gifts ? a box filled with your partner?s favorite sweets or surprises are always an amazing way to keep a relationship alive.

Encouragement

When you and your partner are apart, it?s always good to encourage each other every single day. When you are apart, you don?t get to feel that hug, squeeze of the hand, or goodbye kiss that most couples enjoy. Think of your partner and what they may be going through. Pick up the phone, send an email or just reach out and tell them that you are thinking of them. Wish them good luck on a job interview or congratulate them on a recent promotion. Be as verbal as you can be with your partner and encourage each other all the time.

Keep Busy

Instead of worrying about when your phone will ring, stay busy. This will really benefit your relationship. Do things you enjoy and then share them with your partner when you are reunited. In fact, I suggest throwing yourself into work, hobbies, charity, whatever it is you do when you?re separated, so that when you?re together, it?s that much more special. Furthermore, you can make sure you never have to work while you?re supposed to be spending quality time together!

Being in a long distance couple can seem to be tough, but with good communication skills and some understanding, you can make any distance work!

However, now the need for knowledge about sports medicine and the prevention of injuries and health conditions. We are exploring this topic because of the fact that there are certain issues that are specific to women?s sports medicine.

Knee injuries are a common problem in sports, and women are especially susceptible to these. 'Workaholics' Returns With 'Hard-Hitting' Third Season

'The fans can expect whatever they want this season, they're not going to get it,' Anders Holm warns of new season, premiering Tuesday.

Comedy Central's truly excellent "Workaholics" makes its fully torqued return Tuesday night (May 29), kicking off its third season with an episode that sees Blake, Adam and 'Ders embark on a "business trip" of a different sort — namely, the kind that involves acid.

As the guys explained to MTV News, that's just the tip of the iceberg for the new season, which sees them taking on tough topics, whether their fans like it or not.

"We're really tackling some hard-hitting issues with the third season," Adam DeVine explained. "Obesity, ways to find drugs ... hygiene is a real issue too."

"The fans can expect whatever they want this season, they're not going to get it," Anders Holm deadpanned. "We're not going to give it to them."

As is the case for a show coming off a breakthrough second season — which saw them steal a dragon statue, terrorize a gated community and make tremendous advances in chewing tobacco on television (and was capped by DeVine's Adam Demamp being named one of MTV's Top 50 TV Characters of 2011) — the "Workaholics" plan to swing for the fences with their new season by totally changing everything you've come to love about the show.

"We're jumping the shark; after the fifth episode, we're going to hire movie stars to play us," DeVine said. "I have Matt Damon, he's gaining 60 pounds. Wilfred Brimley is playing Kyle [Newachek's water-trashy Kyle Hevacheck]. And we just got a really cute-looking cat to play Blake. And 'Ders is no longer on the show at all."

That newfound clout is also evident in a pair of guest stars who will show up later this summer: none other than the Black Keys, who play "ponytailed dirtbags" and who have struck up a rather unlikely — and slightly soul-crushing — friendship with the "Workaholics" crew since filming their cameo.

"We've just sort of stayed in touch, texting and stuff," DeVine said. "It's cool to see their lives. I'll text them and be like, 'Hey, what's up, man?' and they're like, 'Oh, just in Europe. Fifty-thousand people tonight. Pretty crazy.' And I'm like, 'Well, um, we shot a scene in Van Nuys today with 40 dudes my dad's age working lights, and I had a fake erection.' "

NASA-funded research looks to isotope analysis rather than X-ray for measurement

TEMPE, Ariz. Are your bones getting stronger or weaker? Right now, it's hard to know. Scientists at Arizona State University and NASA are taking on this medical challenge by developing and applying a technique that originated in the Earth sciences. In a new study, this technique was more sensitive in detecting bone loss than the X-ray method used today, with less risk to patients. Eventually, it may find use in clinical settings, and could pave the way for additional innovative biosignatures to detect disease.

"Osteoporosis, a disease in which bones grow weaker, threatens more than half of Americans over age 50," explained Ariel Anbar, a professor in ASU's Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry and the School of Earth and Space Exploration, and senior author of the study.

"Bone loss also occurs in a number of cancers in their advanced stages. By the time these changes can be detected by X-rays, as a loss of bone density, significant damage has already occurred," Anbar said. "Also, X-rays aren't risk-free. We think there might be a better way."

With the new technique, bone loss is detected by carefully analyzing the isotopes of the chemical element calcium that are naturally present in urine. Isotopes are atoms of an element that differ in their masses. Patients do not need to ingest any artificial tracers and are not exposed to any radiation, so there is virtually no risk, the authors noted.

The findings are presented in a paper published in the online Early Edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) the week of May 28. It is titled "Rapidly assessing changes in bone mineral balance using natural stable calcium isotopes."

"The paper suggests an exciting new approach to the problem," said Dr. Rafael Fonseca, chair of the Department of Medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona, and a specialist in the bone-destroying disease multiple myeloma. Fonseca was not associated with the study but is partnering with the ASU team on collaborative research based on the findings.

"Right now, pain is usually the first indication that cancer is affecting bones. If we could detect it earlier by an analysis of urine or blood in high-risk patients, it could significantly improve their care," Fonseca said.

The new technique makes use of a fact well known to Earth scientists, but seldom used in biomedicine: Different isotopes of a chemical element can react at slightly different rates. When bones form, the lighter isotopes of calcium enter bone a little faster than the heavier isotopes. That difference, called "isotope fractionation," is the key.

"Instead of isotopes of calcium, think about jelly beans," explained Jennifer Morgan, lead author of the study. "We all have our favorite. Imagine a huge pile of jelly beans with equal amounts of six different kinds. You get to make your own personal pile, picking out the ones you want. Maybe you pick two black ones for every one of another color because you really like licorice. It's easy to see that your pile will wind up with more black jelly beans than any other color. Therefore, the ratio of black to red or black to green will be higher in your pile than in the big one. That's similar to what happens with calcium isotopes when bones form. Bone favors lighter calcium isotopes and picks them over the heavier ones."

Other factors, especially bone destruction, also come into play, making the human body more complicated than the jelly bean analogy. But 15 years ago, corresponding author Joseph Skulan, now an adjunct professor at ASU, combined all the factors into a mathematical model that predicted that calcium isotope ratios in blood and urine should be extremely sensitive to bone mineral balance.

"Bone is continuously being formed and destroyed," Skulan explained. "In healthy, active humans, these processes are in balance. But if a disease throws the balance off then you ought to see a shift in the calcium isotope ratios."

The predicted effect on calcium isotopes is very small, but can be measured using sensitive mass spectrometry methods developed by Morgan as part of her doctoral work with Anbar, Skulan and co-author Gwyneth Gordon, an associate research scientist in the W.M. Keck Foundation Laboratory for Environmental Biogeochemistry at ASU. Co-author Stephen Romaniello, currently a doctoral student with Anbar at ASU, contributed an updated mathematical model.

The new study, funded by NASA, examined calcium isotopes in the urine of a dozen healthy subjects confined to bed ("bed rest") for 30 days at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston's Institute for Translational SciencesClinical Research Center. Whenever a person lies down, the weight-bearing bones of the body, such as those in the spine and leg, are relieved of their burden, a condition known as "skeletal unloading". With skeletal unloading, bones start to deteriorate due to increased destruction. Extended periods of bed rest induce bone loss similar to that experienced by osteoporosis patients, and astronauts.

"NASA conducts these studies because astronauts in microgravity experience skeletal unloading and suffer bone loss," said co-author Scott M. Smith, NASA nutritionist. "It's one of the major problems in human spaceflight, and we need to find better ways to monitor and counteract it. But the methods used to detect the effects of skeletal unloading in astronauts are also relevant to general medicine."

Lab analysis of the subjects' urine samples at ASU revealed that the new technique can detect bone loss after as little as one week of bed rest, long before changes in bone density are detectable by the conventional approach, dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA).

Importantly, it is the only method, other than DEXA, that directly measures net bone loss.

"What we really want to know is whether the amount of bone in the body is increasing or decreasing", said Morgan.

Calcium isotope measurements seem poised to assume an important role in detecting bone disease in space, and on Earth. The team is working now to evaluate the technique in samples from cancer patients.

"This is a 'proof-of-concept' paper," explained Anbar "We showed that the concept works as expected in healthy people in a well-defined experiment. The next step is to see if it works as expected in patients with bone-altering diseases. That would open the door to clinical applications."

However, the concept extends even beyond bone and calcium, the authors noted. Many diseases may cause subtle changes in element isotope abundances, or in the concentrations of elements. These sorts of signatures have not been systematically explored in the development of biosignatures of cancers and other diseases.

"The concept of inorganic signatures represents a new and exciting approach to diagnosing, treating and monitoring complex diseases such as cancer," stated Anna Barker, director of Transformative Healthcare Networks and co-director of the Complex Adaptive Systems Initiative in the Office of Knowledge Enterprise Development at ASU. Barker, who came to ASU after being deputy director of the National Cancer Institute, emphasized the simplicity of the approach compared to the challenges of deciphering complex genome-derived data, adding "there is an opportunity to create an entirely new generation of diagnostics for cancer and other diseases."

Indy 500 heat 1 for record books? Maybe, maybe not

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? Just how hot was the Indianapolis 500? Well, that depends.

Tens of thousands of fans glistening with sunscreen and toting coolers filled with ice and water descended on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Sunday amid speculation that it would be the hottest day in the 101-year history of the race.

Track officials announced just before 2:30 p.m. that the temperature had hit 93 degrees, which would break the record of 92 set in 1937.

But the National Weather Service in Indianapolis listed the official temperature at 90, and The Weather Channel had the mercury at a balmy 89 degrees.

Official highs and lows for Indianapolis are recorded at Indianapolis International Airport. National Weather Service meteorologist Marc Dahmer said the temperature at the speedway likely was higher because of the amount of pavement, the heat generated by the cars and the number of people gathered in such a small area.

Track officials had spent much of the week warning fans to take precautions against temperatures that were predicted to reach the mid-90s and generate a heat index of 100 degrees. The speedway brought in portable misters and cooling fans, and spokesman Doug Boles said medical staff expected to treat more than 1,000 people during the day.

Former Los Angeles Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda said he was glad to be in the air conditioning for his first Indy 500 - and felt for the race drivers.

"With the equipment they wear, it's going to be tough. It's going to be really tough," Lasorda said. "I feel sorry that they have to do it when it's this hot, too."

Many fans sought relief wherever they could find it.

The heat and cloudless skies sent John Genenbacher of St. Louis under the concrete and aluminum grandstands about midway through the race to get some shade. But he said this was his 39th trip to the race and that the hot day didn't discourage the group of about 40 people who attend the race together.

He said a steady breeze the kept flags flapping helped a lot.

"It doesn't seem as hot as it was a couple years ago," Genenbacher said. The race-day high hit 89 degrees in 2009.

Susan Binder of Columbus, Ind., headed under a tent for some infield tailgating with family members after watching the first 25 laps of the race from her seat along the main straightaway. She planned to head back for the final laps of her first Indy 500.

"It was way hot but the breeze was really helping," she said. "We're trying to stay cool down here."

Laurie Smith, 47, of Fishers, Ind., and her 14-year-old son, C.J., weren't fazed by the forecast.

Smith packed hats, bottles equipped with fans and misters and collapsible coolers that included plastic bags containing a damp washcloth and ice to cool down their necks. She also had a secret weapon: a black umbrella.

Smith said she's taken the umbrella on outings to amusement parks and other places to provide shade on hot days, but this was the first time in her four trips to the 500 that she'd brought it to the track.

"It brings (the temperature) down maybe five, six degrees," she said. "It makes it just a little cooler."

Some fans, though, opted to sit this one out.

Paula Jarrett, 52, of New Palestine, Ind., just east of Indianapolis, has attended nearly every race for the last decade, and her husband, David Hill, has been going for about 20 years. They've sat through unseasonably cold days, heat waves and even severe thunderstorms in 2004 that spawned tornadoes in the city.

"We usually never miss a race," Jarrett said. "We've been at the track before when it's 55 and rainy and you're freezing your rear off and drinking hot chocolate and wishing the sun would come out, and we've been out there and fried in the sun."

This year, though, they decided to sell their tickets high in the third turn after seeing the forecast of record temperatures and heat indexes of 100 degrees.

Even on a cooler day, Jarrett said, the sun is "in your face all afternoon long. It's just hot as Hades up there. You're packed in with all those people up there. You can't keep sunscreen on."

The couple found takers for all four of their tickets. Jarrett said her husband had some "seller's remorse" and acknowledged they would miss seeing the action in person, Still, she said sitting this one out wasn't all bad.

"There's something to be said for staying at home and listening to it on the radio," she said.
